I use Sitecore 8.2 update 3 with Email Experience Manager 3.4.2 rev. 170713.

I send EXM campaigns using CM server and 1 additional Dedicated Email Delivery server.

I use token $firstname$ in the email.

When I see the email in the email client, token is replaced correctly.

When I click the link to see the online version of the email, some of the users don't have the $firstname$ token replaced. They see Hello $firstname$ in their browsers.

Online version link is https://CD.SERVER.COM/sitecore/RedirectUrlPage.aspx?ec_eq=ENCODED and Sitecore redirects me to https://CD.SERVER.COM/email-campaign/messages/2017/CORRECT_EMAIL?sc_pd_view=1&ec_eq=PARAMS.

I suppose that for some reason, contact identifier cannot be decoded from the encoded parameters.

I checked and both CM and DED servers have same EXM.CryptographicKey and EXM.AuthenticationKey values.

Any idea what can cause this issue?

  • Marek, if you create a processor after the decrypt processor in the <redirectUrl> pipeline, you can debug the query string that was decrypted and see the contact identifier. This might help you get a lead on the issue. Commented Dec 18, 2017 at 21:58
  • Thanks @PeteNavarra . I'll check if there is anything that may help

  • @MarekMusielak, did you find the solution how to replace the token in email online version? I'm experiencing this on my campaigns.

  • I'm with @PeteNavarra on this - seems like the user profile isn't being restored into the session correctly. There's maybe 255 reasons why that could fail but I'd expect something in the logs about it. If you can add a test ASPX page you should be able to navigate to that after opening your email and still have the contact loaded into Sitecore context, which might make it easier to probe and work out whether it's found and loaded the contact correctly. It seems like the issue might be with the contact identifier not being correctly passed or decoded when viewing the online version of the email. Here are a few possibilities to investigate:

1. Session Persistence or Cookie Issue: When users click on the link to view the email online, the system might be relying on a session or cookie to identify the contact and replace the $firstname$ token. If there’s an issue with session persistence across your Content Delivery (CD) and Content Management (CM) servers, some contacts might not be identified correctly, causing the token not to be replaced.

2. Cryptographic Key: Even though you mentioned that both the CM and Dedicated Email Delivery (DED) servers have the same EXM.CryptographicKey and EXM.AuthenticationKey values, ensure that the encoding and decoding process for contact identification works consistently across the servers. It’s possible that the decryption process on the CD server (which serves the online version) might not be working correctly for some users.

3. EXM Configuration: Verify that the EXM settings for both CM and CD servers are correctly configured. Ensure the EXM.RedirectUrlPage handler and related configurations are set up properly on the CD server, as this handles the redirection and decoding of parameters.

4. Personalization Data Availability: For users seeing "$firstname$", it’s possible that their contact record doesn’t have the $firstname$ token properly populated, or the personalized data may not be available at the time the email is rendered online.

5. Logging and Debugging: Enable verbose logging for EXM to capture any errors or warnings when the link is clicked. Look for logs around RedirectUrlPage.aspx to check if the contact’s details are correctly retrieved and tokens are replaced.

You can start by checking these potential issues, especially around session handling and how the CD server processes the online version of the email.
